Project Description

The Sheikh Dilu Bapari Jame Mosque is an extension project located in Moghbazar, Dhaka. The form has a monumental outlook, with dynamic forms building a skeleton of several geometric façades of concrete. The project now involves an extension of 7 floors above the ground floor including one main stair and lift lobby on the left and another secondary stair lobby on the right.

The main entrance leads the user’s way into a triple-height space at first, from where they can enter the building. The graveyard lies on its existing location on the ground floor, beside which there is an ablution space in the center and further functional spaces arranged on the other sides. The prayer spaces are arranged in layers at the upper levels through vertical expansion. The west part of the form is closed off, for functional and environmental purposes. The other facades are designed for light to enter in a subtle yet vibrant way – with a composition of concrete plates and textured glass and metal panels. The site line being triangular has inspired the overall geometric approach of the structure.

In contemporary times, architecture is moving towards minimalism, sidestepping over magnificent ornamentation and embellishments. We seek diversity, which might come in the form of minimalism, dynamic forms, or a vibrant textural pattern. Innovation paves the way for architectural evolution. During the design, the team focused more on space quality and environmental issues as it has become substantial in recent times. Traditional regulations are not compromised, despite the attention to a new mosque design intervention.
